The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) John S. Kersey (ASN: 0-463308), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily during the period from July through October 1943. Although constantly exposed to continuous, close-range machine gun, rifle, and mortar fire, Lieutenant Kersey brilliantly coordinated and led a successful attack up; on the enemy.
