The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander [then Lieutenant] Albert Rowe Strow (NSN: 0-82529), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Torpedo Data Computer Operator of the U.S.S. GUDGEON (SS-211), in action against enemy Japanese forces during the SEVENTH War Patrol of that Submarine in areas North of the Malay Barrier from 13 March to 6 April 1943. Demonstrating a keen understanding of fire-control equipment and proficiency in operating the torpedo data computer, Lieutenant Commander Strow rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in conducting attacks which resulted in the sinking of four enemy ships totaling 29,500 tons and in damaging two additional ships totaling 6,000 tons. By his cool courage and devotion to duty, he contributed materially to the success of the GUDGEON in evading severe enemy countermeasures, and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
