The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Alan Robert Montgomery (NSN: 0-61460), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy in the British Solomon Islands area. On the night of 13 October 1942, in the face of enemy fire, Lieutenant Commander Montgomery commanded a United States Torpedo Boat (PT) participating in an attack upon an enemy Task Force of cruisers and destroyers. Lieutenant Commander Montgomery personally scored a hit on an enemy cruiser. His capable leadership resulted in the safe return of his command to its base, and without personnel casualties. His courage and conduct throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
