The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Commander Charles Kilday Miller (NSN: 0-82327), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. REDFIN (SS-272), during the SIXTH War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy Japanese-controlled waters near the Southern Coast of Honshu and Hokkaido, from 30 May to 10 July 1945. Despite the danger of being detected by shore-based radar and enemy aircraft, Lieutenant Commander Miller maneuvered his ship through minefields and treacherous shoal waters to complete successfully a special mission, and skillfully evaded all enemy countermeasures. His courage and devotion to duty upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Lieutenant Commander Miller is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
