The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Charles Kilday Miller (NSN: 0-82327), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Diving Officer during submerged attacks and as Officer of the Deck during surface attacks, attached to the U.S.S. REDFIN (SS-272), during the SECOND War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy Japanese-controlled waters from 19 March to 2 May 1944. Skilled and tireless in the performance of duty, Lieutenant Commander Miller contributed immeasurably to the success of his vessel in sinking one enemy destroyer of 1,500 tons and in sinking four enemy merchant ships totaling 28,690 tons. Courageously manning his station in the face of terrific enemy gunfire, he assisted his Commanding Officer in conning the ship into attack position and subsequently retiring without the necessity of a dive, thus making possible repeated attacks on well-escorted convoys. His outstanding leadership, indomitable fighting spirit and devotion to the completion of each perilous mission reflect the highest credit upon Lieutenant Commander Miller and the United States Naval Service.
