The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander James Lowell Page McCallum (NSN: 0-74807/1100), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. BREAM (SS-243), during the SIXTH War Patrol of that Submarine in the Java Sea, Gulf of Siam, and the area southwest of Formosa from 20 April to 15 June 1945. Skilled in the performance of duty, Commander McCallum launched a vigorous torpedo attack to sink a 10,000-ton enemy vessel and effected a brilliant rescue of five aviators who had been downed in treacherous enemy waters. In addition, he completed a special mission of great importance, carrying out his assignments in the face of severe enemy countermeasures. His leadership, courage and devotion to duty throughout this period were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
