The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Jack Eugene Gibson (NSN: 0-79416), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Patrol Leader of Motor Torpedo Boats of a Motor Torpedo Boat Flotilla, during the period from 23 August to 14 October 1943. During this period, Lieutenant Commander Gibson was subjected to bombing and strafing attacks by enemy float planes more than any other patrol leader under the same command. He repeatedly and consistently demonstrated steadfast and courageous disregard of personal danger and devotion to duty under fire. During the night of 13 – 14 October, he again displayed skill, courage, and capacity for successful leadership when the patrol of four motor torpedo boats under his command for seven hours avoided all damage and casualties from repeated strafing and bombing attacks by enemy aircraft, shot down one plane, and captured its pilot. Lieutenant Commander Gibson’s performance of duty throughout has been an inspiration to those serving under him and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
