The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Paul S. Frament, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity during action against Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands from 3 November 1942 to 13 November 1942, while serving as a Corpsman attached to a Battalion of Marines of the SECOND Marine Division at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Frament, with utter disregard for his own personal safety worked his way to a point where he was dangerously exposed to hostile sniper fire while treating a wounded comrade. Later, unhesitatingly running into a heavy mortar barrage, he continued to give aid to the injured until rendered unconscious by an exploding shell. Although evacuated to a hospital in the rear he secured immediate release the following morning and, on his own initiative, returned to his unit. Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Frament would again come under fire and would be evacuated after suffering from exhaustion. He then returned to his unit again and was wounded again by shell fire. He died from those wounds. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
