The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Commander [then Lieutenant] Harry Ellsworth Davey, Jr. (NSN: 0-82480), United States Navy, for meritorious achievement as Officer-of-the-Deck of the U.S.S. HERRING (SS-233), during the THIRD War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy waters, from 6 March to 12 April 1943. Skillfully navigating his ship during a surprise night engagement with a German submarine, Lieutenant Commander Davey rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in obtaining two torpedo hits which resulted in the sinking of this valuable enemy combatant unit. His devotion to duty throughout this hazardous patrol was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
