The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Stanley Joseph Cowin, Jr. (NSN: 0-165876), United States Navy, for gallantry and intrepidity in action in the performance of his duties in a United States Submarine during a war patrol of that vessel in enemy Japanese-controlled waters. As Officer-of-the-Deck, his skillful navigating was of valuable assistance to his Commanding Officer while conducting attacks which resulted in sinking and damaging enemy warships. In addition, he assisted in rescuing Naval aviators. His calm manner and devotion to duty were an inspiration to the officers and men in his ship and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
