The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Chief Pharmacist’s Mate Charles A. Bruce (NSN: 2719212), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving aboard the U.S.S. JOHNSTON (DD-557), in the Southwest Pacific. When word to abandon ship had been given he courageously remained on board an additional fifteen minutes supplying injured men with life jackets, helping them off the ship, and caring for the wounded. During this period the ship was under intense fire by the enemy. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
