The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade William Roe Brewster, Jr. (NSN: 0-123759), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Gunnery Officer of the Destroyer U.S.S. BERNADOU (DD-153), during the assault on and occupation of French Morocco from 8 to 11 November 1942. On 8 November, when the BERNADOU entered the harbor at Safi in darkness in order to land Army assault troops at the dock, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Brewster with complete disregard for his own safety and with great courage and coolness directed the fire of the U.S.S. BERNADOU, from an exposed control station, against heavy fire from hostile forces. His efficient control of the guns silenced the main shore defenses in the vicinity of the inner harbor as well as small arms defenses on the jetties. This aided the assault troops to land virtually without opposition and without casualties. The courage, coolness, efficiency and unselfish devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Brewster were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
