The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Lynnford Lawrence Bondsteel (NSN: 3118212), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in the line of his profession as Pharmacist’s Mate onboard the U.S.S. SAN FRANCISCO (CA-38), in the action against Japanese naval forces in the Solomon Islands area on 12 and 13 November 1942. With utter disregard for his own personal safety, Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Bondsteel, whose battle station was on the 5″ gun deck administered first aid to the wounded even after he had suffered a gunshot wound to his hand. He courageously continued in his care of the wounded until he collapsed on the morning of 15 November, owing to exhaustion and serious infection of his wound. His performance of duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
