The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Floyd Bertram Thomas Myhre (NSN: 0-70032), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession as Officer-in-Charge of the Salvage Party of the U.S.S. McCALLA (DD-488) which boarded the U.S.S. DUNCAN during the early morning of 12 October 1942, while she was ablaze, and following a night engagement with enemy forces. Lieutenant Commander Myhre, by his courage, resourcefulness, and able leadership insured that this ship would not fall into enemy hands. His dedication to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Commander Destroyers Pacific Fleet: Serial 1819 (April 1, 1946)The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Commander Floyd Bertram Thomas Myhre (NSN: 0-70032), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. BUCHAMAN (DD-484) on the occasion of the probable destruction of a Japanese submarine on 22 January 1944. While steaming independently in the Pacific Ocean Area his ship was ordered to assist a Naval Tanker which had been destroyed. He directed his ship to the area at high speed. Despite the loss of power to one engine, he made contact with a submarine, and skillfully conducted a series of night depth charge attacks. Daylight evidence of the submarine’s probable destruction were floating debris and a large oil slick which persisted for several days. His keen judgment and excellent performance of duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Commander Myhre is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)

Commander South Pacific: Serial 001979 (September 28, 1943)The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Floyd Bertram Thomas Myhre (NSN: 0-70032), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as the Commanding Officer of a Destroyer engaged in the assault on Rendova Island and subsequent operations incident to the occupation of the New Georgia Islands including the second battle of Kula Gulf during the period from 30 June to 13 July 1943. Lieutenant Commander Myhre’s ship was part of the cover for the transports prior to the landing on Rendova, and during which assault his courageous and outstanding direction of counter battery work resulted in the silencing of five enemy shore batteries. Subsequently he participated in hazardous operations in the restricted waters of the area as escort for reinforcements, and in two successful bombardments of Munda Point. During the second battle of Kula Gulf Lieutenant Commander Myhre, handling his ship with superb skill and daring contributed materially to the destruction of four and probably six Japanese ships. His gallant and courageous conduct was an inspiration to his officers and men, and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
