The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Elmo Russell Zumwalt, Jr. (NSN: 0-165660), United States Navy, for heroic service as Evaluator in the Combat Information Center of the U.S.S. ROBINSON, in action against enemy Japanese battleships during the Battle for Leyte Gulf, 25 October 1944. During a torpedo attack on enemy battleships, Lieutenant Zumwalt furnished information indispensable to the success of the attack. His professional skill, courage and devotion to duty under fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Lieutenant Zumwalt is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
