The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander [then Lieutenant Commander] Albert Schorr Fuhrman (NSN: 0-78861), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Assistant Approach Officer of the U.S.S. GUITARRO (SS-363), during the FIRST War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy Japanese-controlled waters from 7 May to 27 June 1944. Skillfully training the fire control party and coordinating its activities during combat, Commander Fuhrman rendered invaluable assistance to his commanding officer when his ship was firing torpedoes and undergoing severe anti-submarine measures, thereby contributing to the success of the patrol during which 21,000 tons of hostile shipping and one destroyer were sunk. His ability, leadership and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
