The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Armor) Anthony Di Caprio (ASN: OF-102345), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 18 May 1968, while serving as Commanding Officer of Company D, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Major Di Caprio led his tank company to reinforce American and Republic of Vietnam forces that were engaged in a fierce firefight with a well-entrenched enemy force. Arriving at the battle area, Major Di Caprio initially deployed his seven tanks as a blocking force on the left flank, but soon realized that the tank was not gaining the required tactical momentum. Reacting immediately, Major Di Caprio personally maneuvered his tanks into the center of the attacking formation, placing his own tank where the fire was heaviest. As the battle continued, Major Di Caprio, observing that the friendly assault was slowing, drew his machete, pointed toward the enemy and shouted for the men to charge. The friendly forces, seeing this unmistakable cavalry gesture, were inspired by his valiant act and followed Major Di Caprio’s unit to assault the enemy’s position. Constantly exposed to the withering hail of enemy fire, Major Di Caprio successfully led his men to penetrate the first lines of enemy resistance and completely overran the entrenched insurgents. As darkness fell upon the battlefield, Major Di Caprio personally directed the use of searchlights and flares to illuminate the battlefield, even though he drew a heavy volume of enemy fire on his tank, rendering his own searchlight inoperative. Major Di Caprio’s gallant actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
