The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Theodore F. Gnias (ASN: 42022341), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with 63d Reconnaissance Troop, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 31 March 1945, in the vicinity of Neckarburken, Germany. Private First Class Gnias was in the leading 1/4 ton vehicle of a reconnaissance patrol, when he observed twelve enemy personnel crossing the Neckar River by boat. He opened fire with his light machine gun, killing and wounding all of the enemy personnel. The enemy then opened fire on the patrol from the other side of the river. Knowing that his patrol was ordered to withdraw to a safe position, Private First Class Gnias remained at his post covering the withdrawal of his patrol to a new position with machine gun fire until killed. The magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire of Private First Class Gnias reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
