The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Henry Joe Gregory (ASN: RA-12907220), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving as a Medical Aidman with Company D, 2d Battalion (Airmobile), 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Gregory distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 6 January 1970 in Tay Ninh Province, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit came under intense automatic weapons and B-40 rocket fire from the left flank and front, with complete disregard for his own safety, he unhesitatingly maneuvered forward to the point of heaviest contact. Continually exposing himself to the heavy volume of fire, he moved from place to place treating the wounded and assisting in evacuating them to safety. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
