The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Frank H. Morgan (ASN: 0-294264), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 337th Infantry Regiment, 85th Infantry Division in action on 23 and 24 April 1945, in Italy. When he was ordered to rapidly move his mechanized battalion to a river barrier, Lieutenant Colonel Morgan, a battalion commander, realized the importance of his mission and the difficulty of choosing the correct route, undertook to lead the way himself. Although weary from previous continuous combat, Lieutenant Colonel Morgan, riding the lead tank and ignoring the ever present danger of enemy ambush and hostile weapons, unerringly led his task force deep into enemy territory, and by daybreak his column swept to the rear of an enemy force of division strength. By a series of savage skirmishes, causing the enemy defenses to crumble, he succeeded in capturing approximately one thousand enemy soldiers and thirty-five vehicles loaded with supplies with a minimum of casualties to his own force. This audaciously conceived and brilliantly executed maneuver, due to the heroic leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Morgan, contributed immeasurably to precipitate the collapse of the enemy defenses and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
