The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Colonel Clarence A. Barninger, Jr. (MCSN: 0-5558), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States while serving with the FIRST Marine Division during operations against the enemy in Korea from 11 October to 19 December 1952. Colonel Barninger displayed conspicuous professional competence and resourcefulness in the performance of his duties as Assistant Chief of Staff, G-2. His skillful collection, evaluation and correlation of intelligence information, from many and varied sources, was immeasurable aid to the Commanding General in conducting the operations of the Division. By efficiently coordinating the activities of the numerous agencies of intelligence and molding his section into a smoothly functioning staff, he produced intelligence data which directly contributed to the successful achievements of the Division. Colonel Barninger’s highly proficient service and exemplary conduct were an inspiration to all who served with him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
