Headquarters, 7th Air Force, Special Order G-2224 (December 11, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Thomas H. Normile (AFSN: FR-57870), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an F-4C Aircraft Commander in Kontum Province, Republic of Vietnam on 27 June 1967. On that date, Major Normile led a flight of F-4Cs from an immediate alert posture against a battalion size opposing force that had a vicious attack massed on three sides against a company size friendly force. Adverse weather, reduced in-flight visibility, hazardous mountain terrain and intense anti-aircraft fire justified mission cancellation. However, Major Normile, realizing the urgency and need for close air support, continued the mission and exposed himself repeatedly to draw fire, deliver his ordnance with devastating accuracy, and direct his wingman against pinpoint targets. Disregarding his own personal safety and even though hit, Major Normile did not depart the target area until the friendly force’s safety was assured. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Major Normile reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
