The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Captain Paul Faris Gilbert (AFSN: 0-3156716), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an AC-130 Gunship Pilot over Laos on 27 May 1972. On that date, while on a night armed reconnaissance mission, his actions led to the damage or destruction of ten hostile supply vehicles and the ignition of numerous secondary fires and explosions. Putting aside his concern for personal safety despite 139 rounds of hostile anti-aircraft fire, Captain Gilbert destroyed large amounts of supplies and munitions destined for use against friendly forces. The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain Paul Faris Gilbert (AFSN: 0-3156716), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as an AC-130 Aircraft Commander over South Vietnam on 18 June 1972. On that date, Captain Gilbert’s aircraft was struck in the right wing by a surface-to-air missile causing an almost immediate fire and explosion. Immediately and instinctively realizing that his aircraft was fatally stricken, and without regard for his personal safety, he remained at the controls to provide the most stable platform possible for egress while simultaneously signaling his crew to bailout. The unselfish action of Captain Gilbert during this emergency was responsible for saving the lives of several crewmembers who escaped from the doomed aircraft. By his gallantry and devotion to duty in the dedication of his country, Captain Gilbert has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
