The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Francis James Almeter (AFSN: FR-58181), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving with the 12th Air Commando Squadron near Dong Ha, Republic of Vietnam, on 22 April 1967. On that date, Captain Almeter led a three ship formation of unarmed UC-123 defoliation aircraft against a strategically important and extremely well defended target in the eastern end of the Demilitarized Zone. Despite the most intense heavy automatic weapons fire he continued to press the attack until his aircraft was so badly damaged that he was forced to abandon the target to save his crew and the formation. By his gallantry and devotion to duty in continuing the attack of this critical target in spite of the extreme danger, Captain Almeter has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
