The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant David Berry Waldrop, III (AFSN: FV-3162224), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving as an F-105 Thunderchief Pilot with the 34th Tactical Fighter Squadron, in action near Hanoi, North Vietnam on 23 August 1967. On that date, Lieutenant Waldrop successfully attacked the Yen Vien Rail Yard, North Vietnam, in the face of withering anti-aircraft fire. After completing his bombing attack, and with fuel critically low, Lieutenant Waldrop engaged and shot down two MiG-17 aircraft. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Lieutenant Waldrop has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
