The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major James S. Walbridge (AFSN: FR-31861), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving with the 44th Tactical Fighter Squadron, in action at Bac Giang, North Vietnam, on 24 May 1967. On that date, Major Walbridge led a force of eight F-105 Thunderchief aircraft against the heavily defended Bac Giang Railroad/Highway Bridge. Despite intense anti-aircraft and surface to air missiles that were launched at the force, Major Walbridge delivered his ordnance load of three thousand pound bombs precisely on target. A direct hit on the bridge was observed from Major Walbridge’s bombs and that portion of the bridge was completely destroyed. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Major Walbridge has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
