The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Colonel Fred August Treyz (AFSN: FR 42263), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a F-105 Thunderchief Pilot near Hanoi, North Vietnam, on 30 May 1967. On that date, Colonel Treyz was a member of Drill Flight, tasked to strike Hoa Lac airfield. Impressed with the importance of destroying this target, Colonel Treyz carried his bombing run to an extremely low altitude in order to place his ordnance directly on the center of the runway, rendering it unusable to hostile aircraft. He miraculously escaped personal injury and sustained no damage to his aircraft despite the hail of anti-aircraft fire which engulfed him while he was successfully delivering his ordnance. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Treyz reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
