The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Fourth Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Fifth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Colonel Fred August Treyz (AFSN: FR 42263), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a F-105 Thunderchief Pilot near Bac Giang, North Vietnam, on 24 May 1967. On that date, Colonel Treyz was a member of a four ship flight with the assigned task of destroying a large railroad/highway bridge that formed a vital link in the North Vietnamese transportation system. He delivered his ordnance load of three thousand pound bombs with such precise accuracy that several direct hits were observed and the bridge was destroyed. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Treyz reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
