The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel Fred August Treyz (AFSN: FR 42263), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving with the 44th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Korat Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand, at Vu Chua Railroad Yard on 6 July 1967. On that date, Lieutenant Colonel Treyz led a strike force of sixteen F-105D Thunderchief fighter-bombers into an extremely heavily defended rail yard on the Hanoi-Communist China rail line. Disregarding his own personal safety he placed his ordnance directly on target and as he pulled off the target he was struck by hostile fire. Displaying superb airmanship and high professionalism, Lieutenant Colonel Treyz nursed his severely crippled fighter to a post strike tanker and safely landed it. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Lieutenant Colonel Treyz has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
