The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel Fred August Treyz (AFSN: FR 42263), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving with the 44th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Korat Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand, at Vu Chua Railroad Yard on 6 July 1967. On that date, Lieutenant Colonel Treyz led a strike force of sixteen F-105D Thunderchief fighter-bombers into an extremely heavily defended rail yard on the Hanoi-Communist China rail line. Disregarding his own personal safety he placed his ordnance directly on target and as he pulled off the target he was struck by hostile fire. Displaying superb airmanship and high professionalism, Lieutenant Colonel Treyz nursed his severely crippled fighter to a post strike tanker and safely landed it. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Lieutenant Colonel Treyz has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

On that date, Colonel Treyz led a force of eight aircraft against the Kep Railroad Yards. Despite adverse weather conditions and intense anti-aircraft fire, Colonel Treyz attacked the target and delivered his ordnance with pinpoint accuracy. A secondary explosion with a fireball five hundred feet in diameter and several rail cuts resulted from his devastating attack. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Treyz reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

On that date, Colonel Treyz was a member of Drill Flight, tasked to strike Hoa Lac airfield. Impressed with the importance of destroying this target, Colonel Treyz carried his bombing run to an extremely low altitude in order to place his ordnance directly on the center of the runway, rendering it unusable to hostile aircraft. He miraculously escaped personal injury and sustained no damage to his aircraft despite the hail of anti-aircraft fire which engulfed him while he was successfully delivering his ordnance. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Colonel Treyz reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

On that date, Lieutenant Colonel Treyz as leader of a flight of four F-105D aircraft, executed his assigned mission in an outstanding and professional manner. Disregarding his personal well being in the face of hostile anti-aircraft fire he successfully led his flight to destroy two trains consisting of fifteen and thirty-five cars each. The results of the mission were exemplified by the flight integrity and extremely accurate bombing which was the culmination of his precise planning and execution of the mission. On that date, Colonel Treyz led a thirty-six ship strike force to the Trung Quan Rail Yard, located in North Vietnam. The target was heavily defended by the most sophisticated defenses known to exist. Precise navigation by Colonel Treyz positioned the strike force for an optimum attack. While in the dive bomb attack Colonel Treyz observed rolling stock in the target area. Even though he faced heavy anti-aircraft fire, Colonel Treyz readjusted his attack to inflict maximum damage on the rolling stock. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Colonel Treyz has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
