The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major James Edwin Light, Jr., United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as an F-105 Pilot with the 357th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action on a strike against the Hoa Loc Helicopter Area, North Vietnam, on 7 October 1967. On that date, Major Light while evading hostile MiG aircraft and surface-to-air missiles, courageously made four consecutive low level strafing passes against a well camouflaged helicopter area. The bold determination and exceptional flying abilities of Major Light aided immeasurably in destroying six helicopters and damaging two others. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Major Light reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
