The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major James Edwin Light, Jr., United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving as an F-105 Pilot with the 357th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action near Hanoi, North Vietnam, on 6 November 1967. On that date, Major Light was Force Commander of twenty F-105s targeted against a vital North Vietnamese motor vehicle repair depot and transformer station. Major Light led the force to the targets under extremely heavy odds, engineered a precise roll-in for the friendly forces, and delivered his ordnance directly on target. Because of his precise leadership, the force of Thunderchiefs obtained unequaled bombing accuracy, rendering both targets unserviceable. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Major Light has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
