The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Silver Star in lieu of a Sixth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Perry Lindsay Shuman (MCSN: 0-7991), United States Marine Corps, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Fighter Plane in Marine Fighter Squadron ONE HUNDRED ELEVEN (VMF-111), during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands Area, from 4 to 6 January 1943. Completing his eightieth mission during this period, First Lieutenant Shuman escorted bombers to enemy installations on Munda and carried out combat air patrols over Guadalcanal in the face of strong enemy opposition, thereby contributing materially to the success of his squadron. His skilled airmanship, courage and devotion to duty throughout these hazardous missions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
