The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Colonel William P. Alston (MCSN: 0-6315), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commander of a Marine Infantry Battalion of the FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea during the period 17 June 1951 to 8 November 1951. Lieutenant Colonel Alston consistently displayed his outstanding skill, courage, and confidence in commanding his battalion during the summer defensive operations, and again during the offensive action to seize key terrain in the Sint’an-ni area, and in the establishment of the defense in that sector. A most capable and inspiring leader, demonstrating at all times excellent tactical knowledge, he expertly led his battalion to the completion of all assigned missions, thereby contributing essentially to the success achieved by the regiment and the division. Lieutenant Colonel Alston’s skillful service and exemplary conduct throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
