The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Carroll M. Fyffe, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Fyffe distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 3 February 1968, while serving as a pilot of an armed helicopter of Company D, 227th Aviation Battalion (Assault Helicopter), during a rescue mission near Hue, Republic of Vietnam. While flying escort for a medical evacuation helicopter, Major Fyffe used his aircraft as shield to both suppress the enemy fire and protect the medical evacuation helicopter. When the helicopter was forced to land, Major Fyffe immediately maneuvered his aircraft against the enemy emplacements and succeeded in neutralizing them. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
