The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Donald B. Clark, United States Navy, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a pilot of jet aircraft while attached to Attack Squadron One Hundred Ninety-Five embarked in USS KITTY HAWK (CVA63). On 24 December 1970, Lieutenant Clark was the leader of a flight of two jet aircraft that were called upon to provide RESCAP for two downed aircrewmen in a heavily defended area deep in enemy territory. First on the scene, he was advised that enemy troops had advanced to within five hundred meters of the downed aircrewmen. Attacking directly into a withering barrage of small arms fire, Lieutenant Clark executed a series of low level strafing passes on the enemy positions. The devastating accuracy of his fire stopped the enemy advance and completely neutralized the area, enabling rescue helicopters to enter the area and make the rescue. Lieutenant Clark’s aggressiveness, courage and superb airmanship reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
