The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Daniel I. Parrish (MCSN: 2295719), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Combined Action Platoon L-5, First Combined Action Group, Third Marine Amphibious Force in connection with military operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On the night of 15 March 1968, Corporal Parrish was leading an eight man patrol near Phuoc Thien when two enemy explosive devices were inadvertently detonated, mortally wounding two men and seriously injuring four others. Simultaneously, the patrol came under enemy sniper fire. Reacting instantly, Corporal Parrish utilized his radio to request a medical evacuation helicopter and, despite the danger of detonating additional explosive devices, unhesitatingly moved about the area treating the casualties and assisting in their movement to a landing zone. Upon the arrival of the helicopter, he fearlessly stood in an open area dangerously exposed to the enemy fire and, employing a flashlight, skillfully guided the helicopter to a safe landing. With complete disregard for his own safety, he led a reaction force into the mined area and conducted a thorough search of the hazardous location. While leading a patrol in the same area on 19 March, Corporal Parrish detonated two enemy mines, resulting in the loss of both feet. Despite his painful injuries, he displayed exemplary presence of mind and used his radio to request an evacuation helicopter. Resolutely ordering his men away from the hazardous area, he steadfastly crawled out of the minefield. By his inspiring leadership, exceptional courage and selfless devotion to duty, Corporal Parrish was an inspiration to all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
