The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Donnell D. McMillin (MCSN: 1813597), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company F, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in the Republic of Vietnam on 4 March 1966. The company came under extremely heavy automatic weapons fire from an estimated Viet Cong regiment which was well entrenched on its front and flank. As his platoon maneuvered toward the enemy, Sergeant McMillin, completely disregarding his own personal safety, made his way through intense enemy fire to some of his men who could not advance. Ignoring the vicious fire and demonstrating courage and authority in the face of grave danger, he led these men out of their covered position and across a fire-swept rice paddy toward the enemy. Immediately after this movement, the leader of the second platoon was seriously wounded and Sergeant McMillin, with full knowledge of the hazard involved, unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, went to his aid. In doing so, he was mortally wounded. With bold initiative and uncommon courage, Sergeant McMillin was an inspiring example to his men as he upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the cause of freedom.
