The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal David Lopez (MCSN: 2341710), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Mortar Man with Company L, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 14 September 1968, while moving into a blocking position south of Hill 55 in Quang Nam Province, Company L suddenly came under intense mortar and sniper fire from a large, well entrenched enemy force and the lead elements sustained numerous casualties and were pinned down. Observing two wounded platoon commanders lying in an area dangerously exposed to the hostile fire, Corporal Lopez unhesitatingly moved across the fire-swept terrain and began administering first aid to the injured Marines. When the area again came under a heavy volume of mortar fire, he selflessly threw his body across the two casualties, shielding them from the danger of mortar fragments. After the officers had been moved to covered positions, Corporal Lopez, realizing that one of the platoon sergeants had also been wounded, took charge of the unit and, repeatedly exposing himself to hostile fire, directed the Marines to more advantageous positions. Moving about the hazardous terrain, he retrieved equipment left behind by the casualties and carried it back to his platoon. His heroic actions and deep concern for the welfare of his fellow Marines inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the lives of two officers. By his courage, bold initiative, and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Corporal Lopez upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
