The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Dennis George Johnson (MCSN: 2406779), United States Marine Corps, for heroism while serving as a Rifleman with Company F, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division in the Republic of Vietnam. On 10 February 1969, a United States Army helicopter carrying a load of 105-mm. howitzer ammunition crashed approximately six hundred meters forward of the defensive perimeter of Fire Support Base ERSKINE in Quang Tri Province. Arriving at the crash site with a reaction force, Lance Corporal Johnson unhesitatingly entered the burning aircraft and began to aid the injured crew members despite the possibility that fuel and artillery ammunition might explode at any moment. Ignoring the machine gun rounds which were detonating due to the intense heat of the flames, he remained in the hazardous area and assisted in removing four casualties from the wreckage and placing them aboard a medical evacuation helicopter. Disregarding his own safety, he then provided rear security for the movement back to friendly lines. Lance Corporal Johnson’s courage, bold initiative and steadfast devotion to duty at great personal risk were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
