The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Donald A. Hausrath, Jr. (MCSN: 0-103550), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company F, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in the Republic of Vietnam on 3 and 4 February 1968. During Operation HUE CITY, Lieutenant Hausrath’s platoon was receiving a heavy volume of enemy automatic weapons and B-40 rocket fire as it prepared to assault the city’s Treasury Building. While maneuvering his platoon into position prior to the assault, he observed one of his men fall wounded during a sudden burst of enemy fire. The casualty was unable to move and was exposed to continuous hostile fire. Lieutenant Hausrath daringly began crawling through the intense enemy fire to assist him. Completely disregarding his own safety, he courageously advanced, reached the Marine and pulled him to safety. On 4 February, Lieutenant Hausrath’s platoon was serving as the point element for his company during an assault on a complex of buildings held by the enemy. Upon nearing the complex, the platoon came under automatic weapons and B-40 rocket fire so intense that movement in the area became extremely dangerous. Realizing the necessity of maintaining the momentum of the assault, he fearlessly stood up and led his men forward, skillfully maneuvering and encouraging them while simultaneously firing his weapon. Inspired by his forceful fighting spirit and outstanding leadership, his platoon successfully rooted the entrenched enemy and seized the building complex. In a futile attempt to drive the Marines away, the North Vietnamese launched a fierce rocket attack. Alertly pinpointing the source of the hostile rocket fire, Lieutenant Hausrath commenced to fire his M-79 Grenade Launcher, ignoring the rockets exploding around him as he placed accurate fire on the hostile position enabling his men to advance and silence the enemy bunker. By his calm presence of mind, strong leadership and exceptional bravery under extremely hazardous conditions, Lieutenant Hausrath inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
