The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Leroy Frederick Greenburg, Jr. (MCSN: 2121024), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as an Automatic Rifleman with Company H, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 16 April 1966, Private First Class Greenburg was established in a strategic position on the Company, defense perimeter when a battalion size enemy force initiated a devastating barrage of mortar and recoilless rifle fire. Although Private First Class Greenburg sustained severe shrapnel wounds from a mortar round in the initial fire, he stalwartly refused to leave his post. At one point when the Viet Cong attempted to overrun the defensive positions, he delivered effective automatic weapons fire which prevented enemy penetration in his sector. Later in the two and a half hour attack, Private First Class Greenburg courageously disregarded his own safety and moved to an adjacent position to administer first aid to a wounded comrade. In his gallant effort, Private First Class Greenburg again was wounded, sustaining two hits in the back from enemy small arms fire. Despite his intense suffering, he treated the other Marine then returned to his position. Observing that concentrated fire was being delivered from Viet Cong 57-mm. recoilless rifle about seventy-five meters to his front, Private First Class Greenburg exhibited sound presence of mind, detonating a previously positioned Claymore mine which destroyed the gun position and inflicted heavy casualties among the crew. He continued to defend his position until the enemy attack was broken and the Viet Cong had withdrawn. His resolute effort throughout the ordeal undoubtedly prevented more serious casualties among his fellow Marines and was an inspiration to all who observed him. By his extraordinary courage and dedicated concern for others, while suffering greatly himself, Private First Class Greenburg upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
