The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Roy William DeMille (MCSN: 2269614), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company H, Second Battalion, Third Marines, Ninth Marine Amphibious Brigade, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 3 May 1967, Private First Class DeMille’s platoon came under intense enemy fire while attacking enemy positions in the hills north of Khe Sanh in Quang Tri Province. The enemy was located in heavily fortified and well constructed bunkers which had remained impregnable to repeated attacks by Marines using hand grenades and rockets. With complete disregard for his own safety, Private First Class DeMille unhesitatingly advanced through the hostile fire, crawled into one of the enemy bunkers and, armed only with a pistol, killed two North Vietnamese soldiers. Observing that his unit’s advance was still halted by the intense fire from another bunker twenty meters away, Private First Class DeMille again exposed himself to enemy fire, jumped into the enemy-held bunker and killed the enemy soldiers with his pistol. By his steadfast courage, unfaltering determination and selfless devotion to duty, Private First Class DeMille contributed immeasurably to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
