The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal James E. Thomas (MCSN: 376307), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as a squad leader in A Company, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division during an engagement against enemy Japanese forces in the Southwest Pacific Area. Assigned the perilous task of scouting a wood line 75 yards from the main body of his company, Corporal Thomas valiantly led his squad into the woods where they were met by terrific enemy fire which wounded six of his comrades. Immediately rallying his men, he moved them into the best positions available and after other Marines arrived to replace his casualties, personally stationed the men of the support squad in such an effective manner that they were able to deliver a devastating attack against the entrenched Japanese and inflict many casualties without loss to themselves. Corporal Thomas’ inspiring leadership, cool courage and indomitable fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
