The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Private First Class Oliver J. Reynolds (MCSN: 668464), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a member of Company D, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Provisional Marine Brigade, in action against an armed enemy on 17 August 1950 near Taebong-ni, Korea. On 17 August 1950 Private Reynolds was a member of a rifle squad which was advancing over open terrain in an attack on an enemy position when the squad was pinned down by heavy enemy machine gun fire. The machine gun was well concealed and could not be located. Without regard for his own personal safety, Private Reynolds rose to his feet and deliberately exposed himself in order to draw fire and locate the machine gun. As a result of his courage and determination the machine gun was located and destroyed. Private Reynolds’ gallantry displayed on this occasion reflects great credit on himself and the United States Naval Service.
