The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Harry G. Ray (MCSN: 835222), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company I, Third Battalion. Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Ngesebus Palau Islands, 28 September 1944. Going ashore in the initial landing, Private First Class Ray advanced inland with his company in the face of concentrated enemy machine-gun and mortar fire which inflicted serious casualties. When communications with the supporting tank company were disrupted, he braved the hostile fire to climb upon one of the tanks and communicate with the tank commander. Later in the day, under similar circumstances, he again established communications with the tanks and, despite the intense fire, completed his mission before he fell mortally wounded. By his courage, initiative and devotion to duty he contributed materially to the success of the operation and upheld the highest tradition of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
