The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to George V. Norris (MCSN: 977394), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Assistant Operator of a Rocket Launcher of Company G, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 22 May 1945. Boldly advancing under heavy enemy fire to an exposed position in front of the lines, Private Norris and his gunner launched their rockets effectively upon encaved hostile machine guns. Quick to act when his companion was wounded, Private Norris gallantly carried his gunner back to the lines and unhesitatingly returned to his original position. Operating his rocket launcher alone, he blasted furiously at hostile entrenchments for more than an hour, thereby enabling his unit to take its objective with a minimum loss of personnel. His courage, initiative and valiant fighting spirit reflect the highest credit upon Private Norris and the United States Naval Service.
