The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Lewis M. Nalder (MCSN: 414955), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas group, on July 3, 1944. Although previously wounded while attacking enemy caves, Private First Class Nalder unhesitatingly charged another hostile emplacement armed only with a bazooka and, when the weapon was shot out of his hand, promptly obtained a carbine and personally led a demolition team into the Japanese position. With heroic disregard for his own safety, single-handedly provided cover for his men while they hurled charges into the cave, steadfastly maintaining his position until mortally wounded. Private First Class Nalder’s fearless determination and indomitable fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest tradition of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
