The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Glenn E. Long (MCSN: 272709), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Ninth Defense Battalion, Fleet Marine Force, operating against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands Area on 26 July 1943. One of the three Marines who volunteered to tow a tank to our lines after it had been disabled by a magnetic mine in enemy territory, Sergeant Long unhesitatingly ran into the open, courageously exposing himself to fire from hostile snipers, machine guns and mortars, in order to help attach a towing cable to the crippled tank. As a result of this gallant action in which he was seriously wounded by enemy sniper fire. Sergeant Long was instrumental in returning the tank to our lines and in preventing the Japanese from using it against our forces. His heroic conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
