The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain James G. Juett (MCSN: 0-8779), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Commanding Officer of Company K, Third Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces, on Tinian, Mariana Islands, 31 July 1944. While leading his company along a treacherous cliff, Captain Juett bravely worked his way down the side in the face of hostile mortar and machine-gun fire and successfully completed a reconnaissance of the area. Returning to his unit for tank assistance, he personally led the vehicles through the barrage and brought them into effective firing position, thereby contributing directly to the reduction of the enemy fire which allowed his company to continue their advance. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
