The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain James E. Herbold, Jr. (MCSN: 0-7716), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Adjutant of the Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tarawa, Gilbert Islands from 20 to 24 November 1943. Promptly analyzing the critical situation upon landing on the beach Captain Herbold immediately reorganized scattered personnel into effecting fighting groups to reinforce the thinly held lines and, organizing remnants of headquarters, artillery and shore party units later that night, successfully defended a vital sector of the beachhead. When supplies began arriving the following day, he efficiently established various dumps and allotted ammunition, food and water to all units in the front lines despite persistent, harassing enemy fire and subsequently in the face of continued sniper activity, carried out the difficult task of caring for those killed in battle. Captain Herbold’s inspiring leadership, splendid initiative and tireless efforts under extremely hazardous conditions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
